::On December 8, 1982, fifteen critics of the military regime in Suriname were shot without trial at Bastion Veere in Fort Zeelandia. The 15 murdered persons had previously been arrested and were shot while fleeing, according to army commands. According to other accounts, critics of the military regime were tortured and summarily executed. The soldiers who committed the murders were commanded by army chief Desi Bouterse, but he has always denied having anything to do with the murders. He did apologize for the murders in 2007.
